Escape Goat

She was a child of 15
when she had a child of her own.
Having a dead mother, an absent father,
her boyfriend, and his parents home.

The baby to be named for the mother in law,
took her innocence, her freedom, her childhood.
Everyone wanted her to love the new child,
and she wondered how she could.

The examples of love were short lived and sad.
She was without a mother or dad.
So when the child made it to Earth,
she resented that feeling from the moment of birth.

Baby’s hair and eyes as deep as the truth,
in her heart she felt a hardness.
The audacity of this child to ruin her life,
she must be, she’s definitely full of darkness.

***

Another baby, but of Sunshine, at 17
with hair and eyes full of light.
Maybe she could love this one better,
since she couldn’t get the first quite right.

She clings desperately to her religion,
endorphins her favorite drug of choice.
She shoves the outside sounds away,
responds only to her inner voice.

She confuses her voice with that of a God’s,
her subconscious, the religion she follows.
So her righteousness covers every pain,
when it creeps up from her gut, she swallows.

Her first child is a defect,
a punishment for her sins.
But she must never say these things aloud,
so she keeps it all within.

How dare this dark child speak about her?
Does she realize about abortion or adoption?
This dark, evil child should learn some respect,
feel grateful she didn’t take this option.

The child of Sunlight in every way
is better than the one before.
She’s smart, so pretty, so dignified,
A reward, for a mother so pure.

But that child of Darkness could not die,
no matter how hard she tried.
She prayed and hoped her days would end,
but lacked the true courage for suicide.

Sunshine grew up with love and support.
She is an exemplary daughter.
Yet Darkness felt no jealousy,
thankful Sunshine had a mother and father.

Darkness found her way into a cruel world,
abused, misused, mistreated, confused.
The darkness coated her like a cloak,
the demons walked with her, amused.

Half-dead, alone, and wishing for death,
Darkness meets another Sunlight.
He shown himself into her universe,
his radiance, his glow, so blindingly bright.

He threw off her cloak, and saw her faint shimmer.
He opened her heart, her eyes, and her mind.
A beaming came forth, a dazzling warmth,
it burned like a candle in the night.

Darkness was not darkness in truth,
her mother had convinced her, no doubt.
The light inside Darkness wasn’t allowed to shine,
her mother would not let it out.

But when this warm flame of the candle is blown,
Sunlight and magnification reignite,
the luminance, the hope, the self worth and love,
the feeling she was born just right.
