Vast Expectations

by Heather M Craig   Apr 24, 2005

I await to melt in your river of justice
and swim your stream of mindless regards.
I hurt to feel your painful words rise--
tearing my heart and soul into shards.

I expected your love to evaporate
when I grew too close to your heart.
I counted on the tears to pour from my eyes
when you assembled our depart.

I always had those vast expectations
but never did I forsee the love I'd share
nor surrendering my soul to your presence
nor releasing the chains that allowed my heart to bare.

I thought I'd free you from negativity,
not release my own heart from the pain.
Instead, I lost everything in your eyes of allure,
hoping you'd escape my usual refrain.

I escaped the binding thoughts
and awaited a love I imagined in truth.
However, the thoughts were recaptured
as well as the tears, when I lost you.

Heather M Craig.
