X The Yew Bow And The Tree

by Sole   Apr 25, 2006

It is short and curved and polished
It is made of strong, flexible yew
It has two notches, one on each end
And string, tied to the notches
It is all yew brown, no pattern

Standing on the plain, eyes searching
String drawn, as tight as possible
Gazelle grazing under the the shade of the ancient tree
The silence of the nearly deserted plain
Is broken by the whistle of the hunters arrow
As it flies through the air

The gazelle has fallen
Blood stains the sandy ground
Making a path
As the hunter drags the gazelle doggedly home

Then I feel
The hunters' heartbeat, getting faster as he
Relates the tale to his family.
A slow smile spreads across his face
Eating under an ancient tree.

Wow what a unique theme. I loved the way you went so close up to the hunter ad then followed him through to his family. The imagery was like watching it on TV.

Some really stunning imagery here, I love the way that the poem begins almost as a close up on the bow and then pans out to the wider plains ending as a close up of the hunter with his family, gives the poem a really satisfactory sense of progression. Superb 5/5 x
