A Little Miracle

by Feline Fatigue   Aug 16, 2006

Based on a true story.

Once upon a time,
There was an old man,
But not just any old man.
No, this man was suffering from lung cancer.

Now, this old man really loved cats,
But because he was in the last stages of his cancer,
He needed the care of a hospital,
Meaning he had to leave his precious cats behind.

The old man was in pain and crest-fallen,
But then a miracle jumped up onto his bed,
To his joy, it was a cat.
The cat purred and rested right beside him.

Later, he learned that the cats name was Tigger,
A rescue from an animal shelter.
Tigger lived at the hospital, always visiting the occupants.
But this time, Tigger is ready to give more then she ever did.

From then on, Tigger rarely left the old mans room,
Something she had never done before.
For weeks she comforted the old man.
Amazingly, when Tigger was with him, he was in less pain.

He began refusing his medication,
And instead asked for Tigger.
One night, something was wrong.
She seemed restless, then agitated.

She suddenly got up,
Then jumped over to the old mans wife,
Then to his daughter, waking them both.
They realized what was wrong.

The old man wasn't breathing well,
And as weak as he was,
It was obvious he was in pain.
His daughter called a nurse.

A shot of morphine later,
His breathing comes easier and he sleeps,
But not before uttering;
"Good old Tigger, good old Tigger."

That morning, the old man passed away peacefully.
After his death, Tigger jumped off the bed,
And she didn't return,
For she knew her job was done.

Although this was really like a story and not a poem, you couldn't help but feel so involved in the story. Very sweet but very sad. Good job in writing it! Jpoet*
