Acceptance

by TravisInABottle   Mar 24, 2007

Do you know what it feels like to give your best,
And still hear the person you did it all for,
Say that you failed life's test,
Do you know how it feels fighting each day,
Just so that you can hear him say,

I am proud of you today,

All I do is wait for acceptance in his eyes,
So that for once I can afford a smile,
Everyday it's for him that I stand life's trial,
and push my body that extra mile,
Just so that for once his eyes will say,

I am Proud of you today,

People say they can relate,
But do they know what it feels like when in every decision you take,
It's your incompetence that is thrown in your face,
Can they relate to living life in a maze,
Just so that you can hear your dad say,

I am proud of you today,

I was happy being the top five in class,
But he thought I should be the top brass,
I had 2 letters in college for being a jock and running fast,
Just because I thought I would hear him say those words at last,
But for those words I was always the last in class,

Dad will I ever hear you say "I am Proud of you today"

I try to be popular for his sake,
Because how can one so great,
Have a child, who is third rate,
So I push myself to the limit everyday,
But even as people chant my name I never heard him say,

I am proud of you today,

Everyday you keep raising the bar,
Now its got to the point where I have to jump up to the stars,
But do you know that I can only push myself so far,
Sometimes I feel I can't even reach on par,
To the man you are,

With these words you might think I am desperate,
But do you know what it feels like to follow in a legends gait,
Picking up even his most irritating trait
and that too not because I want fame,
But because for once in this life I want to hear Dad say,

I am proud of you today

Wow, this was very powerful and moving. i can definitely relate to this poem, I also feel like I'm never good enough for my dad. I loved the use of figurative language and repetion of the line "I am proud of you today" it really makes your desire for your father approval stand out. You have quite a talent for rhythm and rhyming and I liked the iambic rhythm, it made your poem seem more casual, as if you were really begging your father to accept you. The paragraph structure was very well done as well, five lines in each one and the rhyme scheme was pretty much spot on in each one. Great work, I really enjoyed reading this.

    Amazing.
Though terribly sad. In some ways, I can relate. Sometimes, it feels as if my whole family expects ME to be the one to go above and beyond and achieve the dreams they never got. When it's not what I want, though I do it anyway because I love them. =] Fantastic poem, truly filled with emotion. 5/5
