My Vietnam

Walking out the door with a bag in his hand,
He turned around with a frown pressed on;
Sighing, he said: "I know this ain`t what we planned,
But I want to you to go on like I`m not gone -

I`ll be in your heart and your head everyday,
And I`ll keep in touch with a letter or two;
But Baby, don`t go worrying yourself this way,
I promise I`ll make it back in time to you."

Holding that picture of him with a gun and a smile,
She hit her knees and read out his words again;
Throwing them onto the "to be burnt" pile,
She stood back and counted out loud to ten.

"Baby if you`re worried about me, I`ll be fine;
The guys and me just finished a big raid;
But say hello to that baby boy of mine,
And try to stay calm, don`t be afraid.

I promised I`d make it home in time for you,
And I hold true and strong to my words,
I know that boy needs me in his life too;
So forget the stories on the news you heard.

We`re all okay up here, despite a few lost men,
But I`ve still got your heart tattooed to my palm,
I`ve gotta go Sweetie, but I`ll be sure to write again;
Love your soldier, up here in my Vietnam."

A tear shattered on the wrinkled page as she stood,
Looking to the tattoo of his heart in her palm, she sighed;
Baby, I`m moving on way faster than you think I should,
And I`m sorry to say, but all of my tears have been cried.

I waited six long years for you to come back home,
Not another letter after, and our boy needs me strong;
So remember in those battlefields you used to roam,
Somehow "my Vietnam" turned around and did you wrong.
