The Highgate Vampire.

by Steven Beesley   Oct 17, 2007

The Highgate Vampire:

Mournful desolate wind in a
fast decaying afternoon sun,
rustling up dead dry leaves on
paths where no living souls dare roam.

The light fades fast
giving way to the dead of night,
shadows grow and
seem to come to life.

A lonely walk through
Swains Lane at night,
your heartbeat races and
your feet will take flight.

Side by side the Gothic
tombs guard their dark secrets
of ghoulish past, not for the living
nor for this day.

Specter with red piercing eyes,
gleaming fangs awaiting for
his next prey to pass unwary
through old Highgates's gates.

A place where even the brave
should be afraid, death lurks
in these lifeless crypts; flee this place
that has fallen far from God's grace.

Wow! Very vivid and dark images paint a eerie image for the minds eye.

    The light fades fast
giving way to the dead of night,
    shadows grow and
    seem to come to life.

I love this stanza. How many times have we been scared of shadows.
    Excellent job!

    Steven,
Oh wow what an amazing piece. Thank you for providing the link, it is truly an amazing place. Simply beautiful but in an eerie kind of way as well. The poem was brilliant, as always.

You have good choice of words through the whole poem and great flow.
    My favorite part is:

    -Specter with red piercing eyes,
    gleaming fangs awaiting for
his next prey to pass unwary
    through old Highgates's gates.-
