Butterflies vs. Fireflies

by JaneDoeWrites   Jan 15, 2014

There is a blaze
rumbling in my gut
that's charring
the inner walls of my chest-
Oh, I pray these
sullen eyes of mine
find myself,
so I can find some rest.

---

The aromatic stench of soot
has painted my nostrils a new shade of black,
where my dirt-stained hands hold up the walls
that earnestly lean back.

Although my elbows are buckling
and my forearms bow admist that weight,
the soil caged beneath my fingernails
remind me it's worth to fight this fate.

So while the crackling sound of wood
may craft a tune that easily could shatter glass,
with the half-full mindset I still have half of,
I crack a smile and dance in ash.

Encompassed in present emotion,
as malnourished wolves would fallen prey,
I swallow back the bitter tastes of defeat
and bite the dust to another day.

Crystal, these words were beautifully penned, I love the opening. It was flawless and free and held so much that you opened yourself up.
I love the rhymes, they were smooth and worked well but it is the content that moved me.
We all deserve happiness and that butterfly feeling but many of us don't get it, and the addition of fireflies...beautiful and creative because it is happiness that lights us up. While sometimes what we want, we don't always get, we must never stop trying.

    Great job.

Wow! It took me five times to read to finally spark an idea to comment lol. I loved the intro here because that's really what your poem was about the inside of your heart. It's easy to build up walls and even more so to break down what's inside. The way you decribed this though is great. If you really think about it the title fits really well with the poem I believe because you are decribing the butterflies in your stomach. And the fireflies light up your happiness that was dimmed forvso long. Overall this is a great poem because of the details. :)
