OUR DRUNK FRIEND

OUR DRUNK FRIEND

He goes out on a limb, he cares not who sees him. He is a handsome fellow, he covers his head with red, his coat is vastly striped like a designer Tuxedo of black and white. He shies away from a fight, slips behind a tree to stay out of sight!

Sometimes his behavior is strange, he will hammer on our palms, and near our front door which can bring much alarm. I go out in the morning and while I yawn, I see my friend laying on a tree limb, sound asleep, drunk on corn, the kind that they put in your gas, and that which goes into sour mash.

Yes, I love our *Woodpecker friend, I feed him with a nice corn log which he gulps down like a frog. He eats so much of the corn with all those carbs that he passes out on a branch, and if by chance I walk by him I have a laugh at this funny lout.

*This is a true story, our funny friend is a Florida Red Bellied Woodpecker and he does eat so much of the corn log that he passes out, lying flat on a branch of our Grapefruit tree.

I agree with Mandy a delightful read. You had me fooled at the beginning thought your reference to corn was whiskey. Very clever. Milly x

Thanks Milly, I do at times try to fool the reader until the ending, my poem "The Road" is one like that.

This was a delight to read, I kind of want to come hang out with your drunk friend! Great read and I love the rhyming.

Thanks Mandy, the bird actually greets me with a tune when I open the garage door, he knows that I'm the one who supplies the corn. Our Parrot loves beer, but he too falls asleep after a few tastes.
