Lip-reading

by Michael   Feb 6, 2018

The atmosphere congealed-
with his silent mood
as we sat at the dining table

my stomach would bloat;
echoing with an emptiness
a familiar void of uncertainty

rumbled.

He would stare with pinpoint accuracy,
piercing my eyes with
dark-sequined pupils;
threading my attention
with a sharp neurotic glint

I could almost smell the
scent of his appetite
as his merciless hunger wafted.

He would take a lemon.

Yes a lemon!..

..tearing away its peel-
as if it were my skin being stripped
then he’d chew on its citrus pieces;
like segments of my flesh,
spitting out the pips, like bones.

My bones.

Juice-
drooled, down his chin;
as though it was my blood

He would finish.

I waited.

his mouth well oiled-
but remained motionless
knowing he could consume
my fears without moving

his lips.

    Michael! You have done excellently capturing that fear. Felt like I was watching a movie with a terrified child eating with his father. Chilling and captivating at the same time.

    A chilling piece that conjures up images of oppression. Being held prisoner. The observers discomfort, unease and distain vividly portrayed. The presence of a villain with his prey forced to watch him eat. A captivating chilling piece. Best wishes Milly x
