Chronicles of addiction

by Michael   Apr 9, 2018

my head became buried-
knee-deep in final demands
i felt bullied by constant reminders
of over – due payments

‘DO NOT! ignore this letter’

I pampered myself in depression –
curtains sagged;
like flags at half mast

stuck.

derailed mid-way.

grief.

-a reflection of myself.

windows had become
a smokescreen;
stained with nicotine residue

hiding.

behind
from the world outside

my enthusiasm stretched-
as far as the TV remote control
and cigarettes
my appetite was eating away
at my confidence
my weight decreased;
with my anxiety gaining in size

my sorrow.

regret.

my shame of all I
begged.
stole and borrowed..

..time.

i could never repay
or
get back.

    Judging Comment - Chronicles of addiction by Michael points 10 - in my opinion this is a very raw, relatable and brave write because it speaks of addiction (here Michael's addiction) and one which he has openly spoken on the site about. I say it's relatable as many of us have addictions some we hide, some we don't but they are still no doubt hard to succumb and bad for us all the same.

    Wow Michael. This is so raw. No, you can't get that time back, but the time you've spent in overcoming it and getting back on track will pay dividends for your future.
    I'm glad it's nominated :-) x
