Heortophobia

by S.T.A.R.   Jan 14, 2019

Her hands
trembling,
eyes shaking,
heavy breaths,
and cold sweats.

A beautiful dress hung
effortlessly on her door.
Tiny rings, and shiny things
scattered over her drawer.

Happiness and fear,
blended smiles and tears.

She sat on the edge of her bed,
watching her little one
get ready for tomorrow;
a sign for her annual sorrow.

Her hands
trembling,
eyes shaking,
heavy breaths,
and cold sweats.

Excellent write! Though never having experienced this, your description and imagery lets me imagine exactly what this would feel like. Well done.

I didn't even know there was a word for an "irrational fear of holidays". Wow.

This just.... sums everything up. I think the repetition works so well and it's something maybe others can relate to as well. You describe the panic and anxiety that we all know we shouldn't have, but it's so hard to control or ground ourselves sometimes. I understand the trembling and hand shaking all so much.

Thank you for penning this. And once again, love your voice and how direct it is in your work!

Funny that I am reading this whilst on holiday. My fear comes from returning to work and the mindless everyday monotony.

Your description of this phobia is relatable for many who become anxious. I like the way you bookend the detailed panic.
