I'm Sorry I Won't Be Home Tonight

by Nat Quillan   Dec 3, 2019

Hello Clementine,
My darling dear.
I wanted to write you a letter,
possibly out of fear,

I'm afraid I won't be home tonight,
my sweet little girl,
Papa says he's sorry,
my beautiful pearl.

Don't go into my room,
I don't want you to see,
Papa won't be home tonight,
He's going to be free.

Tell Mrs. Mulligan,
that Papa's gone away,
she'll take you to meet that nice lady
we met last Saturday.

She'll get you a new Papa,
since I won't be home.
I can't send anymore letters,
can't see anymore how brightly you've shone.

I'm sorry I won't be home tonight,
This is the last letter, I fear,
My sweet Clementine,
my little darling dear.

Take care of yourself for me,
sweet little girl,
I'm sorry I won't be home tonight,
to see your lovely curls.

Please, my dear
Never forget how true,
now matter how much you think it's not,
I love you.

Papa.

Written with a delicate tone, a tenderness despite the heavy sadness. Also, the name "Clementine" is beautiful and has a sort of innocence to it. I like that you included a name, making it more personal and the "Mrs Mulligan" as well, it made everything more haunting.

Oh and welcome to PnQ! Can't wait to read what you share on here!
