jenny wren (rondeau)

by Mr. Darcy   Dec 21, 2020

for jenny wren flew in the glen
amongst the bush and bramble stems;
she hid away from prying eyes,
a form so delicate and wise.
oh how to see her - where and when?

as winter drifts i cant pretend,
i wish her near so i could mend,
my heart it cries a lasting sigh
. . .for jenny wren

the icy snow, it did descend,
it's been a dream i can't amend;
her silhouette, my only tie
to that image within my mind
and so I sit and wait 'til then
. . .for Jenny Wren

A Rondeau is a French form, 15 lines long, consisting of three stanzas: a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet with a rhyme scheme as follows: aabba aabR aabbaR. Lines 9 and 15 are short - a refrain (R) consisting of a phrase taken from line one. The other lines are longer (but all of the same metrical length).
