Cherry Blossom Serenade (NaPoWriMo 2021 Day 7)

by Obscure   Apr 9, 2021

The petals fall,
strumming the thin skin of the drum
thrum, dum, dum

Here at the feet of an old cherry tree
Here lays a boy, not a man
The only defense that he ever possessed
clutched in the palm of his hand

Why was he so desperate to stand
With the crashes of war sounding round him?
What was the reason a child enlisted
Was sent into a battle so grim?

Message sent, message sent
this brave drummer boy's
final message was sent
But he'll never hear it answered

Cherry blossoms mourn
and sweep in solemn circles
over head
over drum
with a thrum, dum, thrum

Hear the blossom's serenade

(I know that this isn't the right day for this, but I'm kinda working haphazardly through the prompts that I haven't done)
