A City at Lunchtime

by Jane Do-Re-Mi   Feb 15, 2021

On the pavement
a chalk drawing is admired
by the lunchtime crowd
and the artist smiles
but, soon a summer shower
sees them scurry off
into shopping mall burrows
leaving a forlorn artist
watching his masterpiece
merge to a Monet before
it finally drowns.

A little girl in red wellington boots
jumps for joy and cries out
"Come and see the man's beautiful rainbow
mummy".

Once again, the artist smiles.

The violinist seems unaware that someone
has left five pounds in his case
as the final strains ring out
from an overture only he can hear.

A dog wags it's tail as he finds
a forgotten burger
discarded in the rush.
