That's the Road to Follow

by Kaitlin Kristina   Apr 19, 2005

See those lights? Along that path?
That’s the road to follow.
If you follow it precisely, it’ll lead you from your sorrow.
Those dim and scattered flames,
Along that broken road,
Whisper all life’s secrets,
As time, they’re very old.
To those who tread its path,
To those who accept its plight,
To those who understand the journeys
Pitfalls, pain, and strife,
You will one day come to find,
That you’ll never find the end-
Forever, you will march this road,
Every straight and bend.
Never will it ease your pain,
Through your desperate hollow,
But it will satiate your tastes for now,
That’s the road to follow.

Those broken stones that grace your step,
Those cracks along the way,
Instruct you, for each time you fall,
You’ll get up, your due you’ll pay.
My advice is to go awfully slow,
Meticulously carve your path,
For once you discover you’re on the wrong turn,
It’s far too late to double back.
I see you skim the landscape,
With those young and lusttful eyes,
Hoping to conquer this lonely path,
Turn my words to dust and lies,
I see those looks a lot,
Often, I really do.
For all of us were young once,
My dear friend, and I was too.
Don’t start out so eager,
That you burn out like a flame,
I warn you, don’t be reckless,
For if you fail, you're to blame.

One day you’ll come to find,
When you pass the bones of dead,
Along this broken road,
The exact one you’re to tread,
That you have made it farther,
That your excitement did sustain,
When you look up at the moon at night,
And discover why she wanes.
Temperance and peace are granted,
By this broken path of time,
You’ll come to know the ways of life,
And hear the secrets loud as chime.
This road, it will break you.
There is not one that can’t attest to that,
But let me tell you, friend,
None of them regret.
If you look to fill your void,
Look to fill your hollow,
Listen to me when I say, that
That’s the road to follow.

Thank you.

wow...I loved this poem. I thought I was reading an autobiography when I read this couplet:

Those broken stones that grace your step,
    Those cracks along the way,
Instruct you, for each time you fall,
You’ll get up, your due you’ll pay.
My advice is to go awfully slow,
    Meticulously carve your path,
For once you discover you’re on the wrong turn,
It’s far too late to double back.

Anyways I loved it. Take care.

lol, my spell checker told me that reckless was wrong! That was how I spelled it originally, a bug maybe? Hmmm.

Thank you Lipton, you're the best.
