Arboreal Pirate

by Fig   Aug 27, 2005

Feel the weight of my body
Dangling by my arms
Cling tightly to the branch
Rough bark and softened palms

Feel the power in my muscles
As I swing from bough to bough
Feel the growing sense of urgency
Must reach the top somehow

The branches sink beneath me
As I shimmy up the mast
The blood is roaring in my ears
My heartbeat running fast

A tiny glimpse between the leaves
The crows’ nest is in sight
My body weaving round the tree
Fists are clinging tight

One final haul, and reach the top
Collapse against the tree
Push hair back from sweaty brow
Look out, survey the sea

The waves of corn, and grasses tall
Ripple in the breeze
The ship I sail in glides along
Cuts through the surf with ease

Sail towards the horizon
The blood red setting sun
Captain of my ship of green
Adventure has begun
