When Girls Telephone Boys

by The Queen of Spades   Apr 10, 2007

She dials quickly
For fear of the numbers
Burning her fingers
Deliberately and cautiously
She presses
Each push of the button
Echoing her racing pulse
One ring
And she's worried
Another ring
Her heart is pounding
Third ring
She's scared to death
One final ring...
And he answers
It only takes the utterance
Of a single simple word
To jolt her out of her world
And she freezes
Her heart stops
The cessation of breath
She says nothing
Hangs up the phone
Nothing, but silence
"Maybe next time" she whispers.
