There has been a mistake

by Crystal Rose Blooming   Jun 23, 2008

Reaching into the mailbox, Shelly retrieves a letter
Opening it with shaky hands she began to read
I'm sorry but your husband was killed in the line of duty
Her breathe left her body , her head pounding
Falling to her knees face in hands she began to cry
Her heart breaking, her stomach twisted in knots
He'd gone to fight for his country, I love you on his lips
Promising to return safely to her as quickly as possible
She felt this loss was more then she could bear
Retreating to her room she opened her bottle of pills
A hand full she takes with tears streaming down her face
The morning finds her lifeless body clutching his picture
In the mail that day, a letter, there has been a mistake
Your husband is alive and soon to return home

This is such a heart wrenching, sad poem and the ending was unexpected. It was like a "punch in the gut".

Somthing a lot of familys deal with, it touched me and made me think a lot about if that day comes for me and that letter gets sent. Very well written and soulful. -Charles

    Oh my gosh,
all I can say is WOW,
This was such an amazing and insightful poem.
It really made me think a lot
about what is going on in the world and the
pain that people are facing by losing their
    loved ones to war.
There was so much passion in this poem
You gave an outstanding over view which expresses the pain that
    the world has to offer
    with things such as war.
    Great job!!
