The Spell of Summertime

by Poet on the Piano   Jun 27, 2012

Hope
climbing
in heat waves
that make you feel
as if the sun has saved
this one moment
to sit by your
side.

Never
knowing when
the breeze will
awaken and brush
it's cool, willow lips
across your neck,
all in a second
of life's
magic.

Realizing
that love travels
upon these summer
portraits, though you
say you have little
to give, you have
it all, dreams are
no more without
journey.

Smiles
that never met
blooms like these,
are feeling the spaces
between their breaths,
and thinking of
all the air
to breathe
anon.

    MaryAnne,*

The form of this poem is pretty to look at but to be honest I didn't find it to be appealing when reading. It seemed to make my eyes dart across a little too quickly but that's probably just me. I do like the shape however; I think it was cleverly done and created a nice image.

I really liked the reference to heat waves, it's funny I was working on some poetry last night and heat wave was a term I was fooling around with. I don't hear it often in poetry.

A few terms/lines that really stood out to be where:

    "willow lips"
    "Summer portraits"
"feeling the spaces between their breaths"

These were all really quite beautiful and had a relaxing earthy element to them. You write nature poetry well, I'd love to read more of this style by you. I think your words really altered by atmosphere; this poem was tranquil and made me feel calm. Lovely work, MaryAnne.
