Canvas of a Modern Day Poet

by Sincuna   Dec 30, 2013

Who is this man who uncloses me
every night, with my bright eyes illuminating
his heartrending fingers, stroking every letter of my body,
the figures of my neck, and the makeup of my thighs?

There are some nights when he'd
touch me slowly, flirting, clueless what to do.

But my desired occasion is when he is active
with his thoughts, knowing when and where to touch me;
fingers passing every street of my body, as if searching for
that one empty alley, where he could take me away;
seduce me, own me.

And when finished, he stares at me
with a triumphant look, reading
my eyes, as if they are filled
with poetry.

    "Stroking every letter of my body" -- this is the line that really brought me into this poem. The subject of this piece is clever, but the metaphors are what hold it together. I also think your imagery is quite strong: "fingers passing every street of my body, as if searching for that one empty alley, where he could take me away; seduce me, own me." Bodies with streets, bodies with empty alleys, these thoughts are so endearing and tantalizing. I just want to sink into this poem, much like poetry seems to want to sink into you. I relate so much to the second stanza, although maybe in reverse. Wanting so bad to flirt with poetry, coming up with a few spare phrases here and there, but utterly unable to hold on to it for long enough to keep it mine... it's a lovely piece Sincuna. I wish I had more points to give.

    First of all, Congratulations! It was an honor to share the front page with you! This piece is absolutely stunning and it makes me wonder why I haven't read more of your work. I most certainly will make sure I stop by more often. :)

    The title is very intriguing, it definitely draws the reader in quickly... making one question who a 'modern day poet' is.

    I have read a few poems that have personified poetry itself, however this one blows me away. I can't stop reading it over and over again.

    My overall interpretation of this poem is that some nights poetry will keep us up at night, trying to express ourselves the only way we know how. We crave words and to be 'touched' by inspiration, only to be 'teased' in the end. But on those special nights when our mind is lustful, we see the world through different eyes and create some beautiful poetry. And in the end, when that poem is finished, we feel proud to be a poet.

    I can relate to this so much, some nights words just won't come no matter how hard I try, but on other nights, it just pours out of me. I really do love this and I will be adding it to my favorites list.

    I'm so glad that you won, you definitely deserved it!

    Very interesting. This modern day poet is like a modern day art. One needs an imagination to create a masterpiece!

    This took me into a world where art and poetry collides drawing a vivid portrait. I also like how you made poetry into a feminine character as the poet tries to sculpt out a beauty..an excellent write.

    Congrats on the win!

    First of all, I love the title. It's romantic and artistic. Who and what is the modern poet? What do their words do? What do they spark in us? Already, I feel like this will be inspirational in the way that unveiling poetry and love can possibly be.

    I like how you weren't afraid to be contemplative, ask who this man is that is before you. I think it is wise to step back sometimes and try to look at a person in a different light, even if we've known that person all of our lives. How much significance do they have in our lives, what parts, etc.

    Very unique imagery that was sensual and appealing like this line: "stroking every letter of my body".

    I almost feel like this lover seeks more than something physical, trying not to just see the body as an item but viewing it as something that is no longer empty or lonely. Many emotions and ideas here.... lust perhaps, the idea of seducing and owning this person, yet wanting to be guided somehow.

    Beautiful ending, tying in the poetry. Then, when you write at the end how it was about poetry, I begin to think that poetry is a figure (possibly mysterious lover) in our minds who tries to direct us. Sometimes, it doesn't know how to lead us, so we don't have words available, but sometimes he inspires us and we are satisfied with what we created. What work of art we made.

    Congrats on the win, also an honor to share the front page with you. Hope you enjoy this new year!
