Night Shift

by Ren   Dec 31, 2015

You didn't know me,
As your teary eyes search mine,
Your grief and heartbreak,
Hanging heavily in the air.
I am a stranger,
Watching you sob over,
Your loved one's still body,
Cries echoing down the hall.
You didn't know me,
As I clear the bed,
Covering her lifeless body,
With a white sheet.
I am a stranger,
Struggling to hold back,
My own tears,
As I watch you mourn.
You didn't know me,
As we bow our heads,
Praying for a lost life,
That I did not know.
I am a stranger,
But I want you to know,
I did all I could,
To bring her back.
You didn't know me,
As I knelt on the bed,
Using all my strength,
To pump life back into her.
I am a stranger,
Dripping sweat,
Trembling with exhaustion,
With the image of your loved one,
Forever engraved in my mind.
You didn't know me,
When a time was called out,
Marking the end of her time,
Here on earth.
I am a stranger,
Weighed down with,
So much guilt and sadness,
For your loss.
You didn't know me,
As our eyes catch again,
And my heart wrenches,
With so much sorrow,
I bow my head and leave.
You didn't know me,
I am a stranger.

This speaks so much about the kind of person that you are Dear Cowgirl! They do not know you, and you do not know them...someone dies and your heart breaks, you feel their loss...and you are sorry even if you might have done your best! You have a golden heart! A heart-touching story that is so beautifully penned. Really great piece!

At first, i wasn't a fan of the end punctuation after every line, and how the poem was one giant long stanza. Then i read some comments, and it hit me. This is powerful. I like how the end punctuation works well, it speaks and slows down nicely to emphasize the drama. Truly saddening, and the ending... Touching.
