It's a twelve step process

by deeplydesturbed   Mar 20, 2017

Sitting in a room surrounded by strange faces
Listening to each tragic story, the pain, the hurt, the loss
As one starts talking, he gets up and paces
Discussing how he lost his job; ending a friendship with the boss

I drift off and start to read the paper
Handed to me as I walked in
the person is going on in the background about a skyscraper
Taking in the words in front of me; my head begins to spin.

Step one is to admit we are powerless
controlled by the substance of booze
Step two is to get godly help to empower us
This is a step I must skip; I choose.

Step three is also to turn to a god for help
religious is something I am not
Step four is to inform another person and yelp
the issues that we have got.

Step five; six and seven are also religious crap;
these I also chose to miss
step eight is a list that we must map
of all those we have hurt while living in our own bliss.

Step nine is to make amends
This is getting harder to do
Step ten is to constantly admit to friends
when off the wagon we flew.

Step eleven is prayer
and consistent attendance to group
Step twelve is to continue to share
Sharing how we grow as a person and how we manage to recoup.

Then all of a sudden the room is quiet; all eyes are on me
I guess without being very poetically symbolic
all I can do is stutter quietly

“Hi, my name is Naomi;
and I’m an alcoholic..”

This is fantastic and very well written, especially the description of the group and what goes on in meetings. Your thoughts are raw and honest and you portray them extremely well throughout as you describe each step. Well done and major props to you for finding the courage and strength to do one of the hardest things of all...admitting you have a problem. I wish you all the strength, encouragement, support, and love on your journey to recovery!

If the evil Ben hadn't nominated this i would have .

As for the poem, kudos to you on that N, your voice in it is powerful and the emotion raw and straight talking and I can imagine how it felt to write something like this.

It's one thing to admit to yourself, another to go, another to write about it and another to share, and just like your write says it's step by step and then look back and see what you've accomplished.

    Take it easy N

      Thanks Ben.
It was a lot harder than i though it would be, and i had edited it many times.. i think i had it sitting in word for a few days beforei even got the courage to post it.. but in doing so, it may help someone else to step up and realise its alright to not always be alright.

The resounding support i have received from my poetry family has been nothing less than heartwarming.

So thank you all! and thank you all for wanting to nominate.

Awww Nams, I know it took a lot of courage to admit you have a problem and to actually take those first steps. I am proud of you and I want to thank you for sharing this personal write. We are all behind you sending support, hugs and prayers (I know the religious part isn't really your thing) but I believe prayer , whomever your God may be is always a help. Well done on this...
