24 April

by E. J. Iverson   Apr 25, 2017

Inhale-

smoke in my lungs
flavoured blueberry and
cinnamon chapstick
filled memories linger
against the walls of my
nostrils.

Your presence was
the spike of nicotine
my body craved

held between frigid
fingertips.

...

Exhale-

you left me like
the last puff
of this stale
cigarette,

all at once
into the night sky.

    Judging Comment:

The movement in this piece was wonderfully portrayed. It felt as though I read this in the time it took me to take a deep breath and I felt both lighter and heavier for having done so. The comparisons of this person's love of whatever kind to a cigarette were incredible because even though comparing love or lovers to anything you are dependent on is becoming overdone, it still had personality and a uniqueness to it that allowed for this piece to stick with me even after I had read it and the other pieces nominated this week.

Bluejay, thank you for this comment. The first time I read it upon winning made me feel so wonderful as it still does several months later. I really appreciate you taking the time to break down how you feel about it. Thanks again. (:

It seems like you have described the very thing that is held
between the fingers..liked the imagery and the layout of this poem.
