Just What a Smile is Worth

by mossgirl19   Jun 28, 2017

Mama always say smile to visitors
I'm quite accustomed to that
Even when I face debt collectors
I have to smile a lot.

Mama always say smile to neighbors
When I pass them in their lawns
I might just get their favors
To stop prying on our home.

Mama always say smile to relatives
And greet them with good words
So they will take me as a positive
And forget to judge my worth.

Mama always say smile to everybody
Though I know not the soul
Cause he or she may be somebody
To save me from a fall.

But why do I always have to smile, Mama?
What is the worth of a happy face?
“Oh, dear, it simply saves us from the trauma
Of this long and tedious race.”

Sometimes I will read something and I will simply like it for what it is without having to think too deeply about it. This was one of those occasions.

A smile can often brighten someones day, and it can alter a person's reaction to us. It is also true that sometimes we have to smile when it's the last thing we feel like doing.

I really like the repetition of the first line in each stanza. I think for me, it gave it quite an eerie feel. I honestly thought - having not looked at the category it was placed in - that something rather dark was on it's way. I thought a murder or something unseemly was about to occur in the last stanza. And yes, I guess I would've liked that.

If we can keep smiling when all around us is crumbling, then that is a commendable feat indeed. Having said that, it's not always easy, is it?
This got me thinking about a poem called 'If' by Rudyard Kipling; read it if you get a chance.
All the best as ever, Mel,

Ahh, Ben! I read it and it's a beautiful poem! Thank you for sharing it!
No, it's never easy to smile because it is never easy to not be affected by what is happening around us. The poem is really great, Ben!
