Mortal Steps

When I dwell upon my past deeds,
I'm not quite sure just how I feel.
Sometimes I feel ecstatic,
Sometime like I'm a heal.

I've committed acts of violence,
Though I've always been provoked,
But it shouldn't feel good or pleasurable,
When you have a guy clamped by his throat.

If a God or Gods exist upstairs,
Or perhaps some kind of devil down bellow,
I'm not sure what they'll make of me,
And in which direction I will go.

I've done more good than bad I think!
A man with no holy grail or chalice,
But when my time comes to calculation,
I wonder if the books will balance?

I sometimes think there is no utopia,
That we only have this earth.
To do good or bad as only men can,
So have I proved my worth?

My path to heaven is not showing,
And it's a thing upon which I dwell,
Because for every heavenly step I've taken,
I've trodden a thousand more through hell.

    I love this so much. So simple yet so deep. I think we all ponder this from time to time, even though I stopped a long time ago, I can definitely relate. "Because for every heavenly step I've taken,
    I've trodden a thousand more through hell." Definite chills, written so well!

    Well done Craig! Well done! A lot of food for thought in this write. I guess it depends on who you speak to as if there is a heaven and a hell. I like to think we should just be good people on this earth right now and I believe people can change and sometimes we all have done bad things, I guess it's how we carry on after that is our deciding factor.

      I think life is a constant battle, often we will make bad decisions sometimes good. Like you say it's how we carry on afterwards that defines us.

    Nice work Craig, an honest man at last! how many others in this world have not gone through that life style? Been there, done that! Did you know that Heaven is filled only with past sinners? Just being good does not get anyone in Heaven, you must enter through a special door! Jesus is that "Door", and Faith in him is the key. Once entered, you become his friend, and will have Eternal Life. He came to seek and to save SINNERS, not the so called GOOD people. Great write!

      I'm not gonna go in to the whole religion thing but I have my beliefs. I'm not a regular attendee of church and doubtful I ever will be. Although I may be there more often than I have been in the past. Been asked to play drums for my daughters church group band lol
