None of Them are You

by Someone Invisible   May 17, 2019

I drive to many places.
I meet many people.
Everyday.
Someone.
Something.
New.
Some things are similar to others I have seen.
Some people look the same as others I have met.
But no one comes close to you.

I have never forced my truck up mountains higher than your cheekbones.
I have never seen forests more lush than your lashes, your beautiful beard, or wild hair.
Never driven over roads more rough than that wonderful sleepy voice.
Have not gone over bridges stronger than your capable arms.

I have driven to many places.
I have met many people.
Everyday.
Someone.
Something.
Sometimes new.
Some things look similar to others I have seen.
Some people look the same as others I have met.
But no one ever quite like you.

No place as colorful as your vocabulary.
No sun ray as warm as your place in our bed.
No other person I more eagerly wanted to show the road to.
No one else I more bitterly miss.

I have passed by many places.
I have forgotten many people.
Everyday.
Someone.
Something.
Never quite new.
Most things similar to others I have seen.
Most people the same as others I have met.
And none of them are you.

I liked the repetition and "staccato" tone of the places and people. As life progresses, you meet and move on from certain people, or they don't leave an imprint so to speak in your life. But this person does. This person is different than the rest. There's a tale of adventure here and also that "spark" of a love, of holding on to the memory and having it travel with you so that you see that light and how it varies from others' who may not leave an impression on you.

Beautifully written. Congrats on the win!

I'm a firm believer that just because the relationship ended, doesn't mean you need to scrub your life clean of them and their memories. They were an important part of your life and it would be a sadness to forget that. Thank you so much, I've been on this site since '12 and this is the first contest I've won.
