Ship Of Dreams

by cassie hughes   Nov 24, 2020

Oh, Mayflower, dear Mayflower so strong and so true
From England you shipped them safe, pilgrims and crew.
Ten gruelling weeks after first setting sail
you finally anchored, the New World unveiled.

Your sister, sweet Speedwell sprang many a leak,
Her hull proved unworthy, her timbers were weak,
So taking the extras you rose to the task,
Proud lady held firm as storms threatened your masts.

If not for your stout heart, unwavering crew
They all may have perished as savage winds blew.
But finally reaching the haven they sought
Your labour was ended their faith was restored.

Oh Mayflower, prized Mayflower thanks ring out for you
In your absence those pilgrims could not have won through
The Compact was signed ‘ere they stepped foot ashore
And was writ into history, foundation of law.

From humble beginnings through hardship and strife
The pilgrims held firm, each gave thanks for their life
Though their passage had ended, hard work lay ahead
Yet their hearts were held true, to bright future you’d led.
