Shade Tree

by Maud   Apr 6, 2021

You were my shade tree -
on a hot summer’s day.

Beauty in your age and movements.
Wise from experience.
Limbs strong and proud,
protecting me from another deep burn.

You gave me a sense of love and security.
One that can only come naturally.
Roots grounded,
to keep me from flying away.

They tried to take you away.
I protested peacefully, for weeks,
standing my ground.
But you still let society cut you down.

You left me. Weeping like a willow.
Awaiting the day the clouds turned gray,
to disguise the tears that remain.
To hide my broken heart.
