You Left

by Maud   Mar 30, 2021

I’m folding laundry again.

I see the little shorts you wrote a poem about.
The dress you asked me to wear before you left.
I never did.

I wore my heart on my sleeve instead.
Pounding and bleeding, begging you to stay.
To love me.

There is such emotion in these few lines. The reality of this person leaving something that is so incredibly hard to grasp and accept. The little reminders of them. How clothes can trigger memories. That last line, choosing to separate the "to love me" was powerful. It made me think of the reasons people leave, if the love was never reciprocated in the way we needed and deserved, if we wanted what couldn't be given to that depth. Or if they left, and it was for reasons we don't understand, so that love is questioned and examined over and over again. And the not knowing can be the most cruel.

Please keep sharing, you have such a clear voice in your poems!
