Rose and the violet

by Aish   Jan 3, 2008

She smiles from behind the locked door as she secretly listens to him singing,

Such a strong, melodic, angelic voice.

She remembers the previous night, when they met in secret,

Defying the rules society has put in place.

Why should they be kept apart because of the colour of their skin, their race, their religions?

Roses and violets can grow together in harmony.

She follows him into the meadow, their meadow, and takes off her veil.

He pulls her into his arms and whispers sweet nothings.
Life has never been this beautiful.

***
He watches his daughter whilst he hides amidst the trees,

Hands clenched as he sees her unveil her face.

He watches this man, not pure, possessed,

And blushes from rage and embarrassment.

He storms out of his hiding and pulls them apart,

Slapping her over and over again.

He beats the young man and leaves him to lie as he drags his daughter home.

She does not speak, does not cry, just stays in a blank state of mind,

For the rose and the violet have been wrenched apart.

I found this piece extremely deep. but at the same time beautiful too. it had such emotion in it, i could almost feel it. and i also love the title.

Roses and violets can grow together in harmony.

i really liked that line. it's amazing how just one little sentence can hold so much meaning. but this poem was lovely, even though it ended sadly, i still loved it! job well done again. 5/5.
