The Light of Thy Virtues [Sonnet]

by The Queen   Sep 10, 2010

Be not afraid of this thief named death
whence came such intruder not one dared.
Thine eyes doth shut when what bodes cometh
in deep slumber thy self be prepared.
Thou may'st decay; thy pursuits art done
no moth nor rust shall covet thy charm,
nor thy fair soul need'st not to be gone.
Thus, help the brethren and cause no harm
thou that lovest, in peace must commence.
When foes' wraths upon thee bestowest
then thy patience shall not take offense
nor troubles shall trouble thy viewest.
Thou that dwell in dust, our patterns be
for thy virtues live, as thine breaths flee.

The English sonnet consists of 3 quatrains and a couplet. The couplet is like the volta (or change) in the Italian sonnet forms. The entirety of the preceding 3 quatrains (12 lines) are summed up (concluded) in the closing couplet. The rhyme scheme for an English sonnet is: abab, cdcd, efef, gg and the form is to be written in iambic pentameter.

I haven't seen to many people do a sonnet on here and yet you have done an excellent job with it. The words you used help the message come across clearly helping the reader to understand what was happening. The metaphors that you used were also very nice.

"Thou may'st decay; thy pursuits art done
no moth nor rust shall covet thy charm,
nor thy fair soul need'st not to be gone."

My favorite line by far. The imagery and overall creativity was so easily seen as you flowed form line to line with ease. So over all I am impressed with the great work and also good job on the form. Good job and keep writing.
