The Lament

by ddavidd   Dec 16, 2019

I saw your cold body,
I hugged your cold body
and from where we touched
I am burning forever.
My death is spreading like tearing on the glass
like blight inside the mirror
like fire on the wet wood

You set me in fire.
you reminded me of death
I've wholeheartedly tried to forget all my life.
You remedied me of life
that I left half burned.
You set me in fire
like a boat
now flames are my sails on this sea,
You unified me with my death
you unanchored my life.

you salted the wound of life
in my tears.

Scott beat me to nominating this!

I see it's been a few months since you've posted, and how I've missed your work. Welcome back, and I will have to check out your other two poems posted within the past few days.

I could not go to sleep without commenting here, as this piece stuck out to me the most, in a haunting way I can't forget.

I liked the consistency of this, the reminder of flames, how you are spreading like wildfire. Life burned you, and now, death is a presence that threatens to keep you lit. There's a heaviness with your repetition of "you" - I didn't taste bitterness in this, not blame per se, just an admittance. Losing and seeing this person leave this world unhinged you, opened you up and left you vulnerable to the flames. To being hurt. To the wounds. To the pain.

Such depth in this and such sadness.
