The Brass Cage

by Kitty Cat Lady   Jul 15, 2020

The cheerful chirps are fewer now
Proud plumage plucked and bare
No more engaging twittering
Just empty distant stares

The chance to soar has long since gone
The world just passes by
And even with the door ajar
The wings forgot to fly

The bars that once were gleaming gold
Are rusted dim with age
The tragic bird will never leave
The cheap brass-gilded cage.

A bird that cannot fly is a very devastating image, and this poem captures that feeling well. My only small query is regarding the cage itself. Slightly nitpicking, but

'The bars that once were gleaming gold
    Are rusted dim with age
The tragic bird will never leave
    The cheap brass-gilded cage. '

Since the cage was originally gleaming gold, then was it ever 'cheap' or 'brass'? The title and 'cheap' contradict the first line of the final stanza. Other than this, a very well written poem!

Hi Daniel. Thanks so much for your in-depth comments. Regarding the final stanza, the idea was that the bird once regarded the cage as 'gleaming gold' but has since realized it was nothing more than cheap brass ... I think I could have made that clearer.
      I really appreciate your comments :-) x
