Stockholm Subjugation

by cassie hughes   Nov 6, 2020

You feed me breadcrumbs,
stale and unappetising,
yet still I return for more
subdued and crushed with
blooded knees that draw me
towards your beguiling will.
You feed me breadcrumbs,
and I willingly swallow them
down with blind resolve
even though I know the danger
in a single speck.

As I read this one I pictured a small, starving bird desperate for whatever was given. When we are alone and wanting we are so apt to accept whatever is thrown our way without realizing the cost. Wonderful imagery.

This is absolutely chilling, Cassie. The breadcrumbs gave off of a Hansel and Gretel vibe, but also symbolized the way someone can not just feed us the bare minimum, but give us parts of something and convince us it's all we need... and we rely on that as a way to cope. You captured this in these short lines, the psychological response, and the complexity of it.
