A Phantom's Hallucination

by Star   Dec 26, 2020

the sounds are getting louder
and the wick is losing its fire

memories wear black gowns
matching the bruises
of the broken arms

fractured bones drop their pain
to the drifters of the candlelight

Love the personification and imagery, especially in "memories wear black gowns". This is short but haunting. And I also like how you wrote "the bruises of the broken arms", adding to the mystery, not really specifying whose broken arms. "the drifters of the candlelight" made me think of those, mortal and immortal beings who wander, or those who are stuck, unable to move on. Or the phantoms of our own memories, reliving certain moments that we can't yet process.

The imagery and title are both excellent. I love how you've used the word ' phantom ' , as it gives the poem a chilling atmosphere. I love this :)
