Devils coat

by PAUL HEWSON   Sep 15, 2004

I have enjoyed the pleasure's of pain
the stinging sensation of the pouring rain
i have embraced the shivers that run through my spine
the standing on graves time after time .
Ive been awake at nearly every first-light
nursing the pains of the night be fores fight
i borrowed the devils coat , for just a short time
i love how it feels , and now i own it , its mine

the devils lent me his life line
away from the fear of fear
the devil lent me his life line
its the best i have felt this year .

i have read all the writing on most subway walls
and suffered so much at the hand of all fools
i haven't denied my one righteous side
but i feel so much stronger in the coat that i hide
because i borrowed the devils coat , for just a short time
i love how it feels , and now i own it , its mine .

the devils lent me his life line
away from the fear of fear
the devil lent me his life line
its the best i have felt this year .

Paul, love this. I love how your relate to holding pain by wearing the devils coat, at times it does feel like that doesn't it. The imagery here is excellent.

Rhythm, beat and wording all fit perfectly.

Nice. Deep. I feel there were lots of undercureents of things unsaid. I enjoyed this.

Interesting! This poem seems to be about the thrill of being bad. Am I correct?
