Jellybean Toes

by Gem   Mar 5, 2017

Man's best friend
The dog is privy to that phrase.
But what does that make you?
An acquaintance?
A companion?
A mere pet?

I don't have the words to explain your worth
They don't exist yet.
But I know you were more than a friend.

We both had our independence.
You probably more than me
With your need for night time patrols.
Adventurous expeditions.
Although shame on me if it rained
And you were caught out
I would pay for that for days.

Pins and needles were a staple of life
As moving was frowned upon
When you had found that comfortable spot.
They were worth it.

Many an evening spent cuddled together.
You never cast judgment
For staying home on a Saturday night.

People say you're incapable of love
Food and shelter is all you want.
We both know that's ignorance talking.
You showed love every day
In a million ways
From a head bump
To a kiss on the cheek
To just being there

Now you're not
And I miss everything about you
From the baritone of your purr
To your jellybean toes.
I miss you.

Wish I had read this sooner. I would've nominated it. I'm a big animal lover and have an especially soft spot for cats. I lost my sweet little Milo at 2 years and 4 months a year and a half ago. I think about him every day. Wonderful poem.

This speaks to me so much. Often I have found my dogs to be the only things in my life that I could trust. Total love and loyalties shared.

It's heart breaking when they pass. I'll post one about me and my old dog at some point or may send it privately should you wish

    Regards

Oh dear, I think I should have stayed away from poetry today, its making me cry like this piece. The loss of a pet is as big as a loss of a friend or family member in my eyes

    All the best,
    Em
