July 10th

It was one of those beautiful
summer mornings.
You know the ones?
Days of endless possibilities...
-
The sun was peeking
out over the mountains.
Alaska, land of the midnight sun,
beauty at every turn...
-
We were excited,
you were coming home!
Father's Day gifts sitting on top
of our T.V. console,
waiting for you...
I can still see that tissue paper
speckled with glitter-
quite the "in-thing"
in those days...
-
Instead of you,
two men came to our door.
They say; "don't shoot the messenger"
but when said messenger
is the bearer of bad news.
Well, all bets are off, just saying...
-
Flying in the fog,
through the mountains,
relying on gauges alone.
Accidents happen.
Lives get lost.
But why did it have to be yours?
-
Flash forward forty seven years...
Ok, so maybe that's not such a flash,
but you get the picture.
Yesterday was business as usual.
Engulfed in piles of paperwork
the day slipped by.
Your day slipped by...
-
Has it been so long
I've forgotten you?
It saddens me
to think you've been gone
since I was seven.
It saddens me even more
that yesterday passed
right on by..
I never thought that would happen.
I'm sorry Daddy...
Please don't hate me...
I could never
forget you...

Loosing a parent leaves us in a limbo sort of feeling..and that part of
the memory numbs until bang that person emerges along with a whole
lots of pain and tears...touching take care

Meena, thank you so much. It is really true isn't it? Going along, la,la,la and BAM! I couldn't agree more.

"(...)But why did it have to be yours?"

I got goosebumps when I reached this part. Reading poetry like this reminds a lot of people (including myself) not just to cherish the people we love while they're still here but more importantly, to show/tell them. This is beautifully written. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Sai, thank you so much. It is true, we never realize or say how much another person means to us sometimes until it's too late.
