work-life

by Michael   Oct 25, 2018

I work alone,
but I am part of a team
the door of my office is open to members of the public
with a wheelchair user friendly entrance at the rear

at times my services stretch further than the road ahead
and on occasions, I will go that extra mile
at no further cost

I take on many roles such as:

A therapist,
parent
teacher

people need not wipe their feet to come in;
however those who wipe greasy hands over
furniture and smearing windows, I do hold a grudge

people are also welcome to spill out their problems;
life history
but not their drinks-
bringing up their entire contents of an evening out
is not acceptable-
in fact its sick!

and a hefty price is paid-
for cleaning.

I do take my work home
but never into the house

leave it locked up on the driveway
until my next shift as a taxi-driver starts again

    I can say it's a funky poem! It's so simple yet shows some depth to a certain level. You are very genuine in your writing that it actually meant something for me as a stranger reading a poem about your personal life. I think the poem deserves a better title to be honest, it's a good write. Started as a note, continued as a story, finished as a poem. I love this character of this poem, it's new for me!

    I don't know if you've ever mentioned you're a taxi driver before on here, but I had no idea and I loved that the last line was that big reveal. I'm sure there's always an interesting story with people! This was super fun to read and it kept me guessing til the end :)

    Such simple honest though slick words. Some delicate storytelling skill there to be explored.

    An intriguing piece. Work life as a taxi driver also means being a therapist, teacher and parent. I expect you could write a book just on your experiences.

    Its very heartening to see you have disability access to your cab because so many taxi firms either refuse to take wheelchairs (even if you can transfer to a seat) and others won't guarentee that their drivers won't charge an extra fee for the wheelchair each way.
